Will my new universal player play HRx Discs?
NOTE: This page will periodically be updated.. (2/26/2012)
SOME WILL!! You should check with the manufacturer for any special information about your player. In general, universal players will NOT play our HRx discs, or similar high resolution discs from Chesky Records or other companies. HRx 176.4 kHz / 24 bit DVD-R Data Discs are burned on DVD-R media, but they contain computer data, not a specific format like Compact Disc, DVD-Audio or SACD. It would be like asking your CD player to play a computer CD-R disc that contains Word or Excel files. As it states on our website, you can't play HRx discs on a CD player, a DVD player or an SACD player. Some have asked if our discs are "Finalized." That is the last process in making a CD, DVD, or SACD master which puts the track listing, timings, etc. into a header on the disc. Our discs contain .WAV files, used in the music industry for master recordings, and do not have that kind of header.
There are a few specialty disc players that will play HRx discs directly, for example the PS Audio Perfect Wave, and several models from OPPO and Cambridge (see our links to compatible equipment) . Otherwise you need to load the .WAV files from the HRx disc onto a computer music server; either one you build yourself with a compatible sound card, high quality DAC (usually external), and appropriate playback software, or one built by a specialty company or dealer for this purpose.
Most computer systems CAN play .WAV files up to 96 kHz without modification, and many Reference Recordings titles are available for download at HDtracks.com at either 88.2 or 96 kHz. The playback of 88.2 and 96 kHz is sonically indistinguishable; the reason for choosing one or the other depends on the sampling rate of the original digital master. It's best sonically to convert 176.4 kHz masters to 88.2 kHz, but if you start with 192 kHz masters, it is best to convert to 96 kHz. Analogue masters can be converted to any sampling rate without loss of quality. Hope this helps!"
